The show was initially only broadcast in London but eventually found a home in households across the UK, revolutionising television for young people and setting the benchmark for every youth TV music programme that followed in its wake.

  • The Universal Want CD – Doves

The Universal Want CD – Doves

Available with Vinyl records London. Signed Cassettes Doves In a tumultuous 2020, the reemergence of Doves with new music has provided a shaft of light in an otherwise brooding sky, finally landing their fifth album, The Universal Want, after an elevenyear artistic break, on Fri 11 September 2020.The equally ecstatic and relieved response from fans and critics to the first track to emerge, Carousels, during the final, confusing throws of the UK and Europe’s strict COVID19 lockdown in June, proved how desperately their idiosyncratic sense of euphoric melancholy was, and is, needed. Catching many offguard, Doves unleashed a track of unfathomable depth, unfurling rich and unpredictable pockets of sound, twisted round a s&le of the great Tony Allen at his very best.“This place is wild at heart and weird on top, you just couldn’t make it up,” said Jimi Goodwin, surveying the world through his window while a global pandemic was taking root in lateMarch 2020. Paraphrasing Laura Dern’s character, Lula Pace Fortune in the 1990, David Lynch film Wild At Heart, Goodwin hits on the Lynchianobsessions shared by all three Doves. Himself, Andy drumsvocals and Jez Williams guitarsprogrammingvocals would often find themselves hosting impromptu postrave, home screenings in the early 1990s.By quoting the film, the lead singer and bassist of the twice Mercurynominated band also, accidentally, expresses what everyone else was feeling at the time of disorientation, fear and hope. Doves have a longstanding habit of doing just that.First emerging in 1998 with the release of their debut, vinylonly Cedar EP, Doves’ first album, Lost Souls 2000, received both press and awardpanel praise, before Number One followup, The Last Broadcast 2002 provided the trio with a major breakthrough, offering with the hit singles, There Goes The Fear and Pounding. StraighttoNumber One follow up, Some Cities 2005 and the difficult birth of the muchloved Kingdom of Rust 2009 appeared to complete a perfect legacy if the hiatus the band called in 2010 lasted longer than anyone hoped. It certainly lasted longer than the band had expected. “It’s bizarre how quickly life just passes,” says Goodwin, reflecting on the years that turned into a decade. The story of The Universal Want, the title itself and other tracks such as Prisoners giving an impression of the band’s disdain towards the consumerist illusion, starts in a rented house in England’s Peak District during secret, unintended writing sessions in 2017. Joining the dots, band historians note that it came a full year before announcing their live return and 18 months before they appeared together publicly. That they were a creative force once more was a near impossible secret to keep, as they worked between studios in the North West and the Midlands.Andy Williams describes the excitement of the sessions, saying “There were times when we felt an indescribable buzz. It was a breeze compared to ‘Kingdom Of Rust’, with one of the nicest things being just hanging out. We were never that far apart I’d call Jimi every month. We’re too closely tied to have lost contact I’d miss them.”Refusing once more to fall into predictable, guitarbassdrums, ‘plug in and play’ dynamics, The Universal Want’s overwhelming sense of intrigue owes everything to Doves’ three decades experience at the wheel of their band a lifespan going back to their time as dance band, Sub Sub, and an autobiographical trip through the sounds of their own lives. From seaside amusements Carousels and the remembered heat of acid house Universal Want to the aimless summer days of youth Forest House, each song sets a new reel running to show fragments of their lives and, in turn, those of their listeners. Shadows of Bowie, rare 70’s soul, Detroit House and Afrobeat are cast subtly across the shape shifting album.Cycle Of Hurt’s, disembodied mantra of ‘it’s a trap’, finds the band once more concerned with finding freedom in a cynical, aspirational age. A band that respects creativity itself, allowing the process to meander, it wasn’t, and isn’t their intention to write a manifesto rallying against vapid consumer culture. “When it comes to themes,” says Jez “we always find a very collaborative way forward. It’s all quite subconscious. It’s only when you look back that you can see the threads linking the songs.”Rewarding fans for ten years’ worth of patience, and welcoming new fans into the fold in style, Doves release The Universal Want in multiple, special edition formats including a soughtafter box set, comprising the album on vinyl and cassette, a limitededition Remix LP, postcards and signed prints. .The Universal Want was selfproduced by Doves, with Dan Austin contributing to seven tracks, while Martin Rebelski backs the band on keys, pianos and synths for a fifth time.Album artwork comes handpicked by the band by Londonbased, Finnish photographer, Maria Lax.Her 2020 photobook, Some Kind Of Heavenly Fire, set evocative images alongside memorabilia relating to a moment in time when hardship, industrialisation and UFO sightings disturbed the peace of her isolated hometown in Northern Finland. Struck by the power in her work, Goodwin acquired the book, then gifted his band mates a copy each.

Tooth & Nail was recorded over a whirlwind fiveday session with Grammy Awardwinning producer Joe Henry whose impeccable production credits include Solomon Burke, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint in his South Pasadena studio. Working with a small band of musicians whose talents had recently appeared on records by the likes of Bon Iver, Lana del Rey and Regina Spektor, the performances have a wonderfully spontaneous feel. The results are, according to BILLY a return to the rootsy sound of 1998 s Mermaid Avenue sessions he recorded with Wilco drawing on soul, country and folk music influences to explore the ups and downs of relationships that have stood the test of time. In 2011,I took a long, hard look at who I am and what I do. This album is the result.

Keeping The Secret CD – Symposium

Available with Vinyl records London. New Cassettes Symposium As soon as it became apparent that Symposium were going to release a Best Of album 2022s Do You Remember How It Was, we knew that it was almost inevitable there would have to be a followup companion piece, which now arrives in the shape of Keeping The Secret, offering fourteen of the most special bsides and rarities carefully curated and compiled in one place.Keeping The Secret began to take shape when Symposiums entire archive of recorded output comprising over 800 pieces of DATs, CDs, cassettes, original master tapes and videos was somehow miraculously located untouched and gathering dust in a small room at Warner Brothers archive warehouse. All of these Bsides were recorded in a white hot fervour in various studios across London, with whatever tools, producers and studios were available, inbetween the excitement of tours, TV appearances and single releases. Sometimes they were a way of realising existing songs that the band desperately wanted to capture on tape, and other times it was a way of experimenting and letting loose. The album comprises fan and band favourites, including songs never before available on vinyl or digital. We know how much some of these songs mean to our fans often more than single and album tracks so we knew this had to be special.Previously only available on a limitededition vinyl single, I Like To opens the album an explosion of punk intent, its one of the first songs the band ever wrote and played together, and also opened the demo tape sent to London venues to get the band their first gigs in 1995.Easily Scared is possibly the oldest fan favourite of the bunch, and was screamed into the void of a hundred toilet venues around the country before anyone knew who Symposium were. The title came about when one of Wojteks old work bosses at W.H.Smiths accused him of being easily scared, and Wojtek determined then and there to quit his job and never get another one.A song created when Hagop locked himself in the control room of the studio with all of the acoustic guitars he could muster, Mairamout meaning sunset in Armenian brings the album to a suitably reflective and emotional end. From the American hardcore infused Ode To The Frogs, the epic widescreen rock of Serenade The Idiot, the psychopathic Jim referencing Ross and Wojteks obsession with The Doors, nods to Nirvana Cartwheels and Iron Maiden Fluorescent, to the final song in a ska trilogy of songs whose titles feature nowhere in their lyrics Carnival the others being Puddles and Fizzy, everything a Symposium fan could want is all here in one place for the first time. Turn it up and enjoy

Ed’s most criticallyacclaimed album to date, it housed the heart wrenching UK No.1 single ‘Eyes Closed’ – a song about his late friend, Jamal Edwards. But it’s not just his recorded music that’s seen the former Glastonbury headliner become one of the soughtafter artists of the 21st century. Possessing a mystical ability to turn 90,000 capacity venues into the pub backrooms that he first started playing in, Ed made history in 2015 after becoming the firstever artist to play Wembley Stadium solo without a band, just with his guitar and loop pedal over three, consecutive sold out nights. At the end of 2019, Sheeran was presented with the Official Chart Company’s firstever ‘No.1 Artist of the Decade’ award following a host of accomplishments in his native UK including the most No.1’s across the UK’s Official Singles and Albums chart from the years 20102019. Most recently, Ed scored two more feats with the OCC after becoming the first British Solo Artist to claim 52 weeks – an entire year – at No.1 on the Official UK Singles Chart, with only Elvis Presley and The Beatles achieving more overall weeks at the top, as well as becoming the firstever artist with four albums spending an entire year or more in the UK Top 10. An artist who’s no stranger to collaboration, Ed joined forces with an array of talent over the past year Elton John ‘Merry Christmas’, Fireboy DML ‘Peru’ and Camila Cabello ‘Bam Bam’ partnerships that have only reinforced his status as one of the most indemand names on the global music circuit.
