Stylistically, FLY TO THE RAINBOW deviated strongly from their debut album LONESOME CROW and moved in a more experimental direction, which nevertheless already showed strong hard rock influences at that time and already foreshadowed where the band would later go. They anticipate developments that years later would lead to the formation of their own subgenre of heavy metal. A good ex&le of this is the title track. Its dragging, hypnotic and at the same time subliminally aggressive and powerful groove has all the ingredients of what would later become known as doom and groove metal. This release is basically the follow up to The Hot Rats Sessions. Frank Zappa used a very strippeddown combo featuring Don “Surgarcane” Harris on violin and vocals. The music concentrates heavily on instrumental and bluesoriented material. This album consists of many unreleased tracks that Frank Zappa bypassed but kept his eye on during his career. He just never got around to releasing them. Some of the tracks were almost included on The Lost Episodes album. 90 minutes of music will be mixed for the first time. The remaining music was mixed and edited by Frank Zappa. The vinyl will only contain the tracks FZ edited and mixed.

Smith had an onstage fight with members of the band and was arrested following ongoing altercations at the hotel at which the group were staying. While the remaining band members quit and returned to England, leaving Smith in a cell in Manhattan, Julia Nagle chose to stay in the band, helping to assemble the group’s new lineup.During the recording of the album, this new lineup was still taking shape and the album features two different bassists. None the less it was very wellreceived album at the time and highly collectible by now. The film is based on Bayley’s 1999 memoir Elegy For Iris. Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent portray Murdoch and Bayley during the later stages of their marriage, while Kate Winslet and Hugh Bonneville appear as the couple in their younger years. Iris won several awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA & a Golden Globe Award. The score is composed by twotime Academy Awardwinner James Horner, who is best known for his work for Titanic, Avatar and The Mask Of Zorro. Horner is accompanied by Grammy Awardwinning violinist Joshua Bell. The quiet drama Iris allowed Horner to indulge his predilection for the uplifting and optimistic while scaling back on bombast.
