Over forty years, 50 releases and 5,000 compositions later, Penta represents a statement return from an unsung jazz great ready to pick up his dues.Born in Suriname and son of renowned composer and orchestra leader Eddy Snijders, Ronald Snijders made his name in the Netherlands his 1977 debut album Natural Sources a remarkable and radical feat of selfdetermination. Released on his own label, Black Straight Records, the album featured only original compositions, for which Snijders played all the instruments, produced and mixed the album himself.Bucking the expectation that Surinamese or Caribbean musicians should only make party records, Snijders blazed a trail, cutting his second LP, A Safe Return in similarly independent circumstances in 1980. Working with a band for 1981s Black Straight Music and 1983s Quartz, Snijders crafted a discography that will be reissued by Night Dreamer to accompany the release of Penta, all transferred from the original master tapes.

This edition was expertly cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, October 2023 on a customised Neumann VMS 80 lathe at half speed using highresolution archive transfers taken from the original 1978 mastertapes. Pressed at Optimal, Europe039s premium pressing plant. Their third studio album Pyramid was originally released in May 1978. It was a concept album centred on the pyramids of Giza. At the time this album was conceived, interest in pyramids and socalled pyramid power was all the rage. A pyramid could be found on the back of a dollar bill, there were stories in the newspapers about the supposed magical properties of pyramids and of course, the cover of Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon.As with other APP albums, the focus was on very highquality studio sound production, and they recorded the album at Abbey Road Studios in London. There were a variety of different lead vocalists employed including John Miles, Colin Blunstone, Lenny Zakatek, David Paton, Jack Harris and Dean Ford.
