Threepiece rockers The Rills today announce their debut album Dont Be A Stranger, out 1st November via AWAL. Along with the announcement comes lead single Your Dads Car, a tenderly bittersweet song inspired by the bands first tour van that vocalist Mitch Spencer bought off an ex partners father. The accompanying Ace Bowerman directed video sees Mitch submerged in a sinking car, drowning amidst the lyrics of the powerful ballad.I used to drive an old VW when we first started touring. I bought it off an exs dad amp for a while it was our tour van, Mitch explains of the vulnerable, arenaready lullaby. I feel like this song is driving that car up to a lake, taking the handbrake off amp watching it fill with water, submerge, and take all the memories of that time with it. The song is really vulnerable amp dark, its quite twisted in a way. You can hear all the cracks in my voice, bits of it fall in amp out of time. Its like seeing an old house from some distant memory but its all decayed and derelict now. I was trying to exorcise some demons on that one, the frontman admits.Dont Be A Stranger was produced by Dave McCracken, the indie mastermind behind many Ian Brown solo records and key works by dEUS and The Rifles, as well as lending a hand to albums by the likes of Depeche Mode, Sports Team, The Snuts and Beyonc. The eleventrack debut record sees these three young friends take the untapped energy that made them viral sensations and darlings of the grassroots scene and direct it into something more considered, complete and heartfelt.They didnt have a lot of choice when they came out of uni, hungry to make a break when COVID shut the world down. We were just a little idiot band, admits Spencer. Obviously we had these dreams, but then lockdown happened and we were forced into doing TikTok and all that stuff because we didnt have a way to play or release music. It worked, and The Rills quickly found themselves with millions of likes on TikTok, thousands of streams, and a healthy following on social media. All of a sudden, it blew up, we had fans and we were talking to the NME. Everything in that time, we scrambled together.
