Recorded in April 1966, ‘Over, Under, Sideways, Down’ was a radical departure from the standard bluesrock The Yardbirds had been performing. The track features a rock and roll backing inspired by Bill Haley’ ‘Rock Around The Clock’, topped with a soaring lead guitar riff from Jeff Beck which borrowed from Indian sitar music. The single became The Yardbirds’ fifth UK top 10 single, and reached 13 in the US. The song remains a high point in The Yardbirds’ catalogue, with Rolling Stone magazine ranking ‘Over, Under, Sideways, Down’ at number 23 on its list of the ‘100 Greatest Guitar Songs Of All Time’. The Bside features ‘Jeff’ Boogie’, an raucous instrumental leadguitar workout clocking in at just under two and a half minutes, the track leaves the listener in no doubt that Jeff Beck was one of the most technically proficient players of his generation. This new reissue features the rare US stereo mixes of both tracks, sourced from recently discovered master tapes. Remastered by Phil Kinrade, and cut by Jasper Ward at AIR Mastering, housed in a heavystock card sleeve featuring the US issue cover with spot UV detailing.
