Conceived by TV producer Elkan Allan as an antidote to the polished theatrestyle variety and entertainment shows of the time, it dispensed with the traditional separation of artist and audience. Its cameras moved seamlessly through the throng, creating an atmosphere of inclusivity hitherto unseen on music programming. The show was initially only broadcast in London but eventually found a home in households across the UK, revolutionising television for young people and setting the benchmark for every youth TV music programme that followed in its wake.
