The Parrots are Diego Garciacutea vocals guitar, Alex de Lucas bass and Larry Balboa drums a loosehipped, primordial rock lsquonrsquo roll band from Madrid. The band met at university in the city and evolved from the same fermament of likeminded artists, photographers, DJs and musicians that recently spawned the acclaimed band Hinds ndash The Parrotsrsquo Diego produced their recently released acclaimed album Leave Me Alone.They recorded the album in one week last September, at the studios of muchloved Spanish sound engineer Paco Loco and his wife Muni, down by the sea in Caacutediz. ldquoPaco has these crazy ideas, like, lsquoI think you guys need a solo here,rsquordquo says Diego. ldquoSo I get my guitar, I drink, I smoke, I start playing and Paco says, lsquoOh this is amazingrsquo You think itrsquos too crazy but he says, lsquoIf you heard this from John Cale yoursquod think it was amazing You are an artist toorsquo He gets completely involved.rdquo The studiorsquos idyllic setting helps too ldquoThey have dogs, they have a swimming pool, and they make the best food ever. Itrsquos such a good vibe there, and it gets you seriously focused on the music.rdquoThe Parrots have that geniusstupidity of all ace garage rock bands, and they mix sunbaked stoner elation with a gleeful mangling of the English language ldquoIf sometimes I express myself in the wrong terms, because Irsquom not English, for me it doesnrsquot matter,rdquo says Diego. ldquoLetrsquos just get wild and do it the way we feel. When I first heard Jonathan Richman singing in Spanish, I loved it. He gets it all wrong and that has so much charm.rdquo They also cite The Monks, The Groupies, 13th Floor Elevators, Buddy Holly and Elvis as inspiration, and Diegorsquos biggest musical love is Marc Bolan ldquoHe has always been my main guy, hersquos always there in my mind. I love the way some of his songs sound so naive but at the same time so mean and so tender.
