Andy outlines how the show was conceived and developed by ITVs Elkan Allen and his young production team of Vicki Wickham and, later, Michael LindsayHogg. Conceived by TV producer Elkan Allan as an antidote to the polished theatrestyle variety and entertainment shows of the time, it dispensed with the traditional separation of artist and audience. Its cameras moved seamlessly through the throng, creating an atmosphere of inclusivity hitherto unseen on music programming.
