‘Saying Currie knows how to craft a song is a bit like saying Caravaggio could paint, but the sideburned Scot’s debut may be his masterwork. MojoJustin Currie has announced that his debut album ‘What Is Love For’ will be released on vinyl for the very first time on December 7th. Originally released in 2007 on Rykodisc, the selfproduced album was recorded over two years in the Del Amitri frontman’s hometown of Glasgow and features an assortment of players including Curries longtime Del Amitri partner Iain Harvie and fellow alumnus Andy Alston.Says Justin of the vinyl release To have made five or six albums since 1997, none of which appeared on vinyl, was starting to make me feel like a fake. After all, what is a record if it isn’t a black platter, with physical grooves and twelveinch artwork Since receiving the test pressings for What Is Love For last month I have been incredibly excited that this odd situation was finally being rectified. Something happens to acoustic based music in the analogue domain that renders it somehow more alive. The blueprint becomes a breathing animal. It has an energy and presence I’ve missed hearing on everything I’ve recorded since Del Amitri’s Some Other Suckers Parade twenty one years ago. There are a number of tracks on this album that suddenly come alive in a way they never did on CD. It’s been an enormous relief to hear that rumble and fizz around the music that producer and mixer Mark Freegard and I always imagined as we were making it. We don’t feel like fakes anymore. We feel like we’ve made a record. The album was well received on its original release, with Mojo magazine awarding it four stars saying, ‘Touchstones here, Currie has said, included Plastic Ono Band and Nina Simone And Piano. Such classic references have bred nearclassic results.’ Justin Currie LP is available for home delivery from Vinyl Records London, only £20
An LP, or long-playing vinyl record, is a classic format cherished by music enthusiasts for its warm, authentic sound. Typically featuring up to 45 minutes of music split between two sides, LPs are the perfect way to enjoy full albums as the artist intended. Their larger format also allows for striking album artwork, making them as much a visual delight as an auditory one.
LPs have become symbols of a deeper connection to music, offering a tactile and immersive experience. From the ritual of placing the needle to the soft crackle as the music begins, playing an LP is a nostalgic journey that transcends digital convenience. Whether you’re collecting vintage classics or exploring modern releases, LPs remain an iconic choice for any music lover.
