April 2023marks the 50th anniversary ofthe releaseofDavid Bowie’sALADDIN SANE, which was released only ten months after his breakthrough albumTHE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. The title track and songs such as’Panic In Detroit,’Lady Grinning Soul’and’Time’marked a significant musical progression from its predecessor, adding brass, woodwind, soulful backing vocals and the distinctive piano playing of Mike Garson.On14th April, 2023,one week before its Golden JubileeALADDINSANewill be issued as alimited edition 50th anniversaryhalfspeedmastered LP pressed from the samemaster.This New pressing ofALADDIN SANewas cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronicsfrom 192kHz restoredmasters of the originalmastertapes, with no additional processing on transfer. Thehalfspeedwas cut by John Webber at AIRStudios.The coverofALADDINSANEhas become one of the moststriking andmemorableimages in rock n roll historyand was rumoured to be the most expensiveproducedup to that point. The cover photograph wastakenby Brian Duffy, who would also shoot the sleeves for 1979’sLODGERand 1980’sSCARY MONSTERS AND SUPER CREEPSand features Bowie with the iconic red and blue lightning bolt makeup, an image whichhas stakedout anindelible spot inthe planet’scultural lexicon.
